Scenario:
Mining
Located at one of China’s largest underground copper mines. This Koepe friction hoist uses a 6×19S+FC wire rope as its core lifting component. The rope works as both head rope and tail rope. It operates in a 980-meter-deep vertical shaft. The system lifts 32-ton skips at 14 meters per second. This is one of the most demanding mining wire rope applications in Asia. The mine produces over 80,000 tons of copper concentrate annually. It relies on continuous hoist operation for ore extraction.
The Challenge
The mine shaft reaches 980 meters deep. Each skip carries 32 tons of ore. Therefore, the rope endures constant high tension. It also faces severe bending fatigue from multiple sheave passes.
Moreover, abrasive rock dust speeds up wear. For instance, particles enter between strands and accelerate internal abrasion. Safety is critical in all mining operations. ISO 4309 sets strict discard criteria for mining ropes.
Furthermore, downtime costs exceed fifty thousand dollars per hour. The mine needed a 6×19S+FC wire rope with proven reliability. Temperatures in the shaft range from 25 to 40 degrees Celsius. Humidity often exceeds 85 percent. As a result, these conditions accelerate corrosion and fatigue.
Our Solution
We selected the 6×19S+FC wire rope for this project. Its large outer Seale wires resist abrasion well. In addition, the construction extends bending fatigue life. The fiber core (FC) provides internal lubrication and cushions strand movement.
Furthermore, every rope passes magnetic flux leakage testing before shipping. Each delivery includes full certification documents. We applied a heavy-duty lubricant suited for dusty environments. Consequently, this reduces friction between wires and extends service life.
The 6×19S+FC wire rope met all tensile and torsion requirements. In addition, we provided on-site spooling supervision. This ensured proper drum alignment and initial tension. Therefore, installation was flawless from day one.
Results
The ropes achieved 800,000+ ton-kilometers per discard life. They passed all NDT inspections on schedule. In fact, testing was done at 3, 6, and 12-month intervals. This specification is now standard for all mine group hoists.
Moreover, the mine reported a 22 percent increase in rope lifespan compared to their previous supplier. As a result, unplanned hoist downtime dropped to zero in the first 18 months. The safety department praised the predictable wear patterns. This made maintenance planning simple and reliable.
Finally, the operator has since expanded the order to three additional shafts. Consequently, this 6×19S+FC wire rope specification is now the group standard across the entire mining operation.
